- Global compatibility: Designed as a mirror of international curricula, ensuring the degree is immediately legible to universities and employers worldwide.
Access to the
Legal Profession
In Greece, Cyprus and Beyond
As holders of a nationally recognised EU law degree, graduates are eligible to pursue the regulated legal professions by following the professional pathway required in their chosen jurisdiction.
The programme’s curriculum has been designed to support this goal. Through optional modules in Greek Legal Terminology and Cypriot Law, as well as a dedicated Common Law elective track, graduates who have completed the relevant coursework and meet the necessary requirements may access the further procedures leading to professional qualification in civil law and common law jurisdictions alike.
Access to professional practice in any jurisdiction is subject to the specific requirements of the relevant Bar Association, which may include language proficiency, adaptation periods, or aptitude examinations.
Internationally
The LL.B. serves as your entry point to the international legal market:
• Postgraduate studies (LL.M.): Direct access to specialised master’s programmes worldwide.
• Bar examinations abroad: The academic background provided, including common law modules, facilitates preparation for bar examinations in other jurisdictions.
Career
Horizons
Maritime Law and Shipping
Greece controls the world’s largest merchant fleet by tonnage, and Thessaloniki sits at the heart of this industry. Graduates with a maritime specialisation are positioned for careers in shipping companies, P&I clubs, maritime arbitration panels, and the legal departments of port authorities and classification societies. The combination of an LL.B. with a maritime elective track in a country that dominates global shipping is a competitive advantage that no other programme can replicate.
International Law Firms
The LL.B.’s comparative structure, combining civil law foundations with common law electives and a strong international law curriculum, prepares graduates for junior positions in cross-border practices. Firms operating in areas such as international arbitration, EU regulatory law, and trade law seek candidates who can navigate multiple legal systems, precisely the skillset this programme develops.
International Organizations
Graduates are well-prepared for careers in international institutions including the European Commission, the European Court of Justice, the Council of Europe, the OSCE, UNHCR, UNICEF, the International Criminal Court, and the World Bank. The programme’s emphasis on public international law, human rights, and EU law provides the substantive foundation, while moot court participation and ADR training build the procedural skills these institutions require.
Corporate Legal Counsel
Multinational corporations operating across jurisdictions need in-house lawyers who understand regulatory complexity. Graduates with training in EU competition law, GDPR, corporate governance, and international business transactions are equipped for roles in compliance, regulatory affairs, and cross-border contract management.
Diplomatic Corps
A law degree with a strong international and European dimension provides a natural foundation for diplomatic careers. Graduates who combine their LL.B. with foreign language skills and regional expertise are well-positioned for foreign service examinations and roles in international relations.
Legal Technology and Research
The programme’s integration of AI-driven learning tools, combined with courses in digital law, computer law, and GDPR, exposes graduates to the intersection of law and technology. This positions them for careers in legal technology companies, compliance technology, and academic research in one of the fastest-growing areas of the legal profession.
International Networks
The Faculty of Law maintains academic partnerships with universities in over 20 countries, including UC Berkeley, LMU Munich, University of Cologne, University of Belgrade, Koç University, and the University of Cyprus. Students benefit from established networks including:
- THEMIS
- Rotterdam Law Network
- Greek-Swiss-German Comparative Law Seminar (since 1992)
- Western Balkans and Moldova Law Schools Network
- Erasmus+ Network with over 110 partner institutions
Additional
Support and Excellence
The +1 Excellence Option
LL.B. + LL.M.
The LL.B. is designed to lead directly into the LL.M. in European Business and Economic Law, a one-year, English-taught master’s programme at the same Faculty. This 4+1 pathway creates an integrated five-year legal education of 315 ECTS, meeting the highest standards of legal qualification recognised internationally. Graduates of the LL.M. gain specialised expertise in areas such as European commercial law, banking regulation, arbitration, and energy law, significantly enhancing their career prospects in both private practice and institutional settings.
Greek Language Studies
Students who wish to develop their Greek language skills can enroll in courses at the School of Modern Greek Language of Aristotle University. While not part of the LL.B. curriculum, these courses are available at the student’s own expense and provide an excellent complement to the Greek Legal Terminology & Cypriot Law elective modules offered within the programme.
Through this combination, students can gain a comprehensive understanding of the linguistic and legal framework of the region, significantly enhancing their professional prospects in the Greek and Cypriot legal markets.
